Harnessing the Full Potential of Product Teams

In today’s evolving digital landscape, effective product leadership is not just a function, it’s a critical driver of business success. As a Product Leader, my mission is clear: to foster healthy product teams, enabling them to create great products that solve real customer problems whilst clearly supporting businesses to meet their goals.

My career began during the early days of ecommerce and content management where I managed the hands-on aspects of product development as founder of an ecommerce business and later an offshore digital marketing and open-source development agency.

I gained invaluable experience in building teams, managing cross-functional stakeholders, and navigating the intricacies of glocal product management across different time zones. These formative years were crucial in sharpening the skills that would later define my approach to product leadership.

After a decade of guiding small businesses, I transitioned into opportunities with larger-scale products, where customer volumes were higher, presenting even more complex challenges to effectively engage, monetise and serve wide ranging audience segments.

The first of the larger-scale challenges presented in 2010 when I joined a digital publisher that had recently merged with BBC Magazines.

Here, I was tasked with a significant challenge: transforming a traditional print publisher into a vibrant, digital-first enterprise. This experience laid the groundwork for future leadership roles across diverse sectors, including Telco with O2 Business, Digital Subscriptions at News UK’s The Times & Sunday Times, and the online Gambling, Betting & Gaming industry with Evoke, formerly William Hill and 888.

One of the most critical aspects of effective product leadership is the ability to connect the dots within an organisation – aligning people, strategies, and processes to ensure a unified vision, mission, and set of success metrics.

My philosophy is that healthy product teams build great products. I strive to nurture these teams, fostering a collaborative environment where product, business, and technical teams can work seamlessly together. It is in this collaborative space that great products are born—products that are not just technically sound, but also designed to solve real customer problems whilst being aligned with the strategic goals of the organisation.

As a leader, I am known for my willingness to ask the tough questions and challenge the status quo, always with the aim of driving constructive change. I am equally committed to the development of my teams, providing the coaching and guidance necessary to define clear growth pathways.

Seeing new product professionals grow and succeed is a source of immense pride.

But leadership is not just about guiding others – it’s also about personal growth. I thrive in challenging environments, constantly seeking opportunities to develop as a leader and product expert.

Feedback from stakeholders and peers has been instrumental in shaping my approach, providing valuable insights that drive continuous improvement.

Product leadership is an evolving discipline that can be shaped to the needs of each business by recognising that a one-size-fits-all approach will rarely deliver the same results in context individual business characteristics.

That said, the base ingredients remain consistent – being able to balance strategic vision, hands-on experience, and a commitment to harnessing the full potential of product teams by fostering a collaborative, innovative environment, enables us to create products that truly make a difference and stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
